Stop The Murdering Epidemic!
We try to keep it happy here at THM but just received some sobering facts.
29.1 Million people
That is the number of people who now have Type 2 diabetes in this country. That number is up from 26 million in 2010. Even worse, ¼ of all adults do not even know they have this disease. They walk around with dangerously high blood sugar and this is wreaking havoc on their bodies and giving rise to other diseases including heart disease and cancer. The CDC estimates that the direct and indirect costs of this disease have reached a staggering $245 billion dollars!
These depressing numbers were all over the news media this weekend with many dieticians and doctors interviewed on what should be done about it. The consensus was to lose weight as the heavier we are the more insulin our bodies require to get rid of the excess blood sugar. This causes insulin resistance which in turn causes Type 2 diabetes. Well, losing weight sounds fine and dandy until one tries to do it.
The first suggestion from the experts was to cut the sugar. Okay, but how does one get their chocolate fix then (some of us consider chocolate its own important food group). Eat Less fats… really? Didn’t God design our bodies to be fueled through healthy fats? Fats are needed for healthy brain, nerve and hormone function. Less meat… strange that meat is to blame when meat consumption has not risen with the rise of Type 2 diabetes. In fact meat consumption in the US has fallen in the last few years while the rise of Type 2 diabetes has accelerated. Exercise ! But how? Many people with high blood sugar barely have enough energy to get through the day let alone put in an hour at the gym.
As Trim Health Mamas (and thousands of Papas too) we’ve got a powerful weapon against Type 2 diabetes yet we still eat a lot of chocolate. We eat meat, we enjoy fats, we love our healthy carbs, we cut the sugar but still include plenty of daily sweet treats, we don’t force exercise – that can come later when people feel revived and energized enough to include it (and we warn against overdoing it). And… we drop weight - hear our doctor’s say… “ Time to cut that diabetes medication.” or better yet… “You no longer have type 2 diabetes.. Keep doing what you are doing!” We hear tens of thousands of these testimonies and they keep pouring in.
Sadly, Type 2 diabetes is still on the rise. Keep sharing the THM good news mamas, it is changing lives but sounds like we all have a lot of work to do yet, getting the word out to many who are still in desperate need.
