My dh is the reason I'm here. In 2009 he suffered a massive heart attack at age 45. He's had double bypass surgery and then this past spring he had a cath and a stent.
When he was home recuperating from his heart attack/surgery I spent the summer learning to cook low-fat and low-sodium because that was what was recommended.
But the low-carb was in the back of my mind..nagging at me......
So I spent the last four years studying everything I could about lowfat v. lowcarb. I became convinced that inflammation from a high carb diet was the culprit more than any amount of cholesterol we might ingest or level we may find in our bloodstream. So I went paleo...or rather primal.
But I love cheese! I found that while bread is not my favorite...after a few weeks I was craving it like crazy! This was NOT sustainable~!
HELLO THM!!!! Finally a logical approach using the science from all the same materials I had been reading over the years. Even better, dh had been listening to me over the years and once he was exposed to THM thinking he was on board 100%!
So while I was overwhelmed at first with all the changes and the learning curve, I'm giving us both a LOT of grace to make this change slowly, over time, learning S and E and FP first and as "bad" foods disappear from our cupboards and are replaced with "good" foods then I'm sure we'll adjust well and make this a lifelong change. NO FADS HERE
ALL that background to lead me to a couple of questions....
All of the material in the book regarding quantities of fat/carbs are given for women, does this change for men? For instance, the 3/4 cup rule for brown rice? Can men eat in greater quantities? If I give him crustless quiche and cinnamon muffins for breakfast, is there any rule about how much of each HE can eat?
Also, he has a major aversion to fresh veggies. So wraps with lettuce or snacking on celery or carrots, for instance, is NOT an option. He's a very picky eater. He's willing to adjust to the difference in taste with nut flours and is now taking low-carb tortilla wraps w/meat for lunch instead of pb sandwiches on whole wheat bread. Also, he loves a banana with his lunch. For reference, he is 5'8" and 193 lbs. He would like to lose at least 20 lbs. CAN a man eat a bit more carbs in a bread or a banana, for instance, for lunch than a woman?
Finally, he's willing, (wow,, this is how I know he's committed!) to give up milk but he wants something to drink other than water or coffee. He's tried the moonshine and doesn't like it. IDEAS?
