We have a tight food budget. Can I do the S and E plan without using the specialty ingredients you mention in the book?
Absolutely! Our plan can work with the most basic of ingredients. Think about foods like whole eggs, egg whites, inexpensive cuts of meat, frozen bags of non starchy veggies like cauliflower (which is cheap and so versatile), cabbage, lettuce, beans, sweet potatoes, oatmeal, basic dairy and frozen berries. All those foods can make plenty of nourishing, family friendly S and E meals.
With the above foods mentioned alone, you'll have plenty of breakfast options like our Trim Healthy Pancakes, or eggs, or a sustaining bowl of oatmeal with Greek yogurt. Lunch can be salad with a creamy dressing with some leftover chicken for protein. Supper can be a ground turkey or beef meatloaf with a side of decadent roasted and cheesy cauliflower... delicious! The possibilities are endless.
Aside from coconut oil, which we hope you'll buy and is available at most supermarkets now, the first specialty item you should save for is a good tasting stevia like Nustevia extract powder. That will make lots of desserts and snacks possible.
The second item on the list would be the one pound bag of glucomannan powder. It should last you months so the initial outlay of about $20 is well worth it. With glucomannan you can make all our puddings, ice cream, gravies and sauces. Life is simply better with glucomannan in it. A slimming world of possibilities open up.
Acquire some of the other special ingredients we mention over time. Don't stress that you are unable to get them right now. When we started our plan we knew little of the special ingredients we often use now and yet we still were extremely satisfied eating only very basic foods that you can purchase from any grocery store. Enjoy what you have and the rest can be acquired slowly.
