The next drink in our Pie Sip series is here – Apple Pie Sip!
If apple pie is what gets you going, then you are about to dive head first into the deep end of scrumptious apple pie flavor. Your choice – enjoy this drink hot or cold. I snapped this pic of my hot version. No, you are not imagining all that frothy, creamy goodness. Apple pie and vanilla ice cream was the inspiration for this recipe and it delivers.
You have our assurance that you can sip on this all day long and only do kind favors to your waistline in the process. Like our other all day sippers, this is a Fuel Pull beverage and this recipe makes two giant quarts of deliciousness. You can roll your tongue around the flavors of good ole American apple pie at your whim on these nippy fall days while still making great strides toward goal weight.
We had so much excited and positive feedback from Pumpkin Pie Sip, the first in our Holiday Life Line drink series that we decided to release the next drink a bit earlier than planned. You kept asking for it. How could we deny our THM sisters of anything?
Like our Pumpkin Pie Sip, the apple pie version is here to save you from feeling holiday deprived and "Grinchified" (if that could pass for a word) in this coming season. It is also here to help defend you from the onslaught of holiday pounds and common holiday illnesses. As with all our drinks, it offers you potent health benefits so keep reading to learn about those below the recipe
If I told you that you can actually detect the flavor and delicate, smooth, mouth feel of filo-pastry in Apple Pie Sip, would you believe me? No? Take the leap of faith ladies…Yes you can! Well, this is what Pearl and I tell each other every time we drink this – somehow, there’s a pastry sensation coming through. Take the Apple Pie Sip challenge to see if Pearl and I are half batty or if you can taste it too. Quick, go marinate yourself with the festive flavor of fall apples all squished up in a scrumptious crust and topped with ice-cream.
THE RECIPE
Place 4 chamomile tea bags in 8-12 oz. of boiling water. Let steep until water cools down to warmish hot but not scalding. Pour this tea into a blender and add the following ingredients.
•1/2 tsp. of apple pie spice (available at most grocery stores)
•3 generous pinches of Celtic sea salt
•2 tsp. of pure vanilla and a generous ½ tsp. of Butterscotch extract (I use Frontier brand Butterscotch– purist friendly of course. If you don’t have Butterscotch extract, omit and add 1 more tsp. vanilla to make 3)
•Pure stevia extract to taste (you need it sweet enough to give that "grandma's best" sweet pie flavor and to offset the tart "Winesap" flavor of a "fresh orchard apple". I use close to ¼ tsp of stevia extract)
•Juice of two lemons
•2-3000 mg of vitamin C (A buffered version that includes bioflavonoids is best and will be easier on sensitive stomachs, you can open capsules if you don’t have powder or even throw tablets into your blender – if you make our Singing Canary drink you’ll likely have this in your cupboard already so yay!)
•1 tsp. of MCT oil or virgin coconut oil (MCT oil is like coconut oil on steroids. It is made from coconut oil and boosts the thermogenic temperature of your body even more potently than coconut oil does. This makes it a powerful fat burner. It also does not have a coconut flavor so it is more neutral in our recipes and does not clump. But coconut oil will do just fine and tastes great in this recipe.)
•2 rounded tsp. of whey protein powder
•Generous 1/4 tsp of gluccomannan or xanthum gum (this is optional but creates a more pie filling, creamy texture to the drink)
Note – if you don’t have the oil or whey protein called for you can substitute with ½ cup of unsweetened almond milk
Blend on high then choose whether you want your APPLE PIE SIP soul warming hot or chilled over ice.
I usually choose to use half of my Sip cold and the other half hot. If you want try the half and half option, take half of the contents of the blender (which is your concentrate) and put it in a 1 quart jar. Pour the remaining concentrate into another quart jar. For your heated PIE SIP, add boiling water all the way to the top of your jar...stir....then taste and adjust to flavor perfection by adding a little more of this or that. If drink is too tart then add a little more pure stevia extract, and vanilla. Next time you could reduce the lemon juice to only 1 lemon if you are not a tart lover (I am). Remember that the Celtic salt balances out the flavor spectrums and also provides electrolytes and minerals. Once you love what you’ve tweaked, pour your hot Apple Pie Sip into a sealed carafe and enjoy a steaming hot mug of apple goodness whenever you need a fix throughout your day or evening.
For a refreshing chilled version, fill your quart to the top with ice and then top off with pure water if your concentrate does not reach the top of the jar. Stir.... taste and adjust the flavors until you "own it". You’re all done!
For a full serving of warmed or chilled Pie Sip, just put the entire blender of concentrate into a 2 quart jar and follow the above directions for either way.
HEALTH BENEFITS
Each kind of tea that is chosen for a THM sipper has a unique purpose. Rooibos African red bush tea was chosen for our PUMKIN PIE SIP not only for its incredible health benefits but because it imparted deep earthy and rustic flavor notes and color to layer the other ingredients upon. For our APPLE PIE SIP we have used chamomile tea as the foundation as it gives a delicate almost pastry like “wheaty" flavor to enrich your PIE SIP with the taste of buttery pie crusts. The addition of the Celtic salt and butterscotch extract plays upon the chamomile tea and adds to the "baked pie" taste sensations.
Chamomile tea has a soothing influence upon its drinkers, which is a great aid to the "rat-race" kind of joyous chaos that comes with the holidays. Chamomile is a treatment for insomnia and sleep disorders, as well as having a calmative effect that is beneficial for those suffering with anxiety and panic attacks. It is so effective as a calming agent that it is used as a treatment to stop muscle twitches. Sit beside the fire side in the evening after a harried day and drink this to calm down and get yourself ready for a wonderful sleep.
The holidays are times of feasting and celebration rich fare . No worries, we’ve got oodles of on plan, rich holiday recipes to delight you but even a THM can overeat on Thanksgiving and Christmas. Overdoing it can leave us with a grumpy bloated tummy. "No Worries MATE" just go easy the next day and sooth your tum tum with every hydrating and healing mouthful of your Apple Pie Sip.
This drinkable pie will help ease your gassy pipes and flatten the bloat. Chamomile is also considered to be effective for those with irritable bowel syndrome. It's not only great for indigestion but soothes menstrual cramps, stomach ulcers and the icky stomach flu! Wow, even if I hated apple pie I think I might start drinking this PIE SIP for its health benefits but who could hate apple pie?
Even those who don't suffer with headaches can get the occasional "splitter" during this coming busy time of year. The great news is that chamomile is considered an herbal remedy for migraines. After brewing your chamomile tea base, save the tea bags and use them later when you get a chance to relax and lie down (Yeah… I'm positive thinking here). Rehydrate them with a little cool water and then lay these refreshing bags over your eyes as you rest to relieve eye fatigue and head pain.
The lemon juice and vitamin C deliver a tart apple nip softened by the deeper woodsy notes of vanilla, and sweet pop from the pure stevia extract. Aside from flavor alchemy, the fresh lemon and vitamin C build your immune system to help safe guard you from the awful sniffles of the season.
Drink deep the goodness of flavor and health, the APPLE PIE SIP way. There is no giant mess of apple skins and cores, and pots and pans... just a giant jug of apple yumminess.
