Where does Kombucha fit in to the THM lifestyle?

I believe it is FP as long as you stay w/ 1 serving (between 6 to 8 oz) if it's home brewed & it's very well fermented (all the sugar has been used). If you are using store-bought &/or flavored watch for added sugar & watch carb amounts on label. Anything over 10g carbs will be an E, under that should fall into FP territory.

Happy for this question and for cashen10s answer. DH keeps the "buch" going (home brew), and because it starts with sugar I wasn't sure how to figure it in. I usually mix with spring water or sprinkle on salad in place of vinegar sometimes. Sprinkle on greens too. Anyways, thanks! Oh, and hello! I'm about 30 minutes old as far as member age LOL

Would you mind posting a recipe? I've never tried kombucha but I keep coming across it on different websites

Kombucha requires a "mushroom" or starter to ferment the tea. It's also called a SCOBY which stands for something like symbiotic culture of bacteria & yeast, sounds delicious, huh?! LOL. Anyway, basically you brew a batch of very strong, very sweet (using real sugar) tea & let it ferment on your counter for about 2 weeks. The SCOBY will feed off the sugar & the end product is similar to Apple Cider in taste & bubbly. If it ferments too long it tastes like ACV & I use it interchangeably.

And you said Pearl and Serene say it's okay because the sugar will all be consumed up, correct?
Do you like the taste of the kombucha? Can you describe what it tastes like?
Thanks for the link.

I think the taste can vary a bit depending on the tea you use in the starter but it usually tastes similar to bubbly, tart, Apple Cider. As long as it is well brewed, giving the sugar time to all be used, a single serving of 6 to 8 oz should keep you in FP range. Any more than that should be reserved for an E meal. I used to keep a continual brew going but haven't done it in about a year. I don't love it so I just decided that with so many other healthy drink options this was too much trouble to keep up. But I have friends who really love it so it's just a personal preference thing. I'm also not big on Apple Cider or Apple anything except a raw apple & I do like to use ACV. I'm not putting down kombucha at all, I am just so thrilled with the THM drinks that I didn't see the point of keeping up with the kombucha when I don't really love it. But it's nice to know where it falls on plan in case I'm tempted to grab one at Whole Foods

Kombucha is a liver detoxifier. About a month after drinking it, I realized that I no longer needed to use deodorant so, there is a lot more to it than the taste. And if you do a second ferment (mix it with some fruit) the kombucha becomes even more carbonated and tastes very similar to pop. Yum!

ACV is also a good liver cleanse & GGMS is delicious in case you don't want to bother with kombucha. Kombucha is very similar to raw Apple Cider Vinegar & has many of the same beneficial qualities.

I wanted to clarify with a "Pearl quote" "I like it but don't make it myself. It does have some carbs even after fermentation. Not all the sugar gets eaten up. Best kept to 1/2 cup at S meals, you can drink more at an E meal."

Oh good, I'm glad you found Pearl's official stance on it. I was just going by carb amt I found when I did a google search. Good to know, thanks Stephanie!

I saw some locally brewed bottled kombucha in Safeway the other day. I didn't buy it because I wasn't sure (and it was over $4 for a bottle!). I just wanted to double check...the ingredients listed cane sugar, but that is necessary to ferment it, correct? Or is this the same as drinking a sugared drink?

Check the carbs listed in the nutrition info. That should let you know if it was added for flavor or fermentation. Also, with the bottled kombucha check that it is raw, there is a better chance the raw is going to be lower in carbs.
