I was checking out trade me last night and there a couple of people selling whey protein concentrate and isolate there. Prices were $42.00 kg plus shipping, concentrate is cheaper and slightly lower in protein at $37.95 plus shipping. These were for plain, unsweetened/unflavoured powder. However even with the exchange rate and postage Swansons Whey protein still might be a bit cheaper.

I'm a kiwi too, in Whangarei I use the Easiyo yogurt; cheap and yummy with a few berries thrown in. Do any of you kow the difference between flour and meal? I've found almond and rye meal at the supermarket, but couldn't find flour. I've been using it and it seems fine though....

Where do you buy quinoa in NZ? DH just bought some at New World, it cost about $6 for 450 grams And what about Stevia? We were buying Natvia at New World but they don't stock it any more. Apparently, it's not being stocked in NZ any more I have read through the recipe section in the book now and trying to come up with a shoestring budget for the THM plan sure isn't easy...

I have had the same issue with quinoa it is very expenisve :/ so I limit my use of it have you tried somewhere like Bin Inn they may sell it cheaper , yep its hard to stay on budget but I am learning slowly and adpating alot of my normal recipes to the THM plan which helps its the puddings and smoothies I finding hard as Whey powder is pricey and so is almond milk Gutted about the Natvia I was going to get some once my Sweete run out so I will just but some more of that here is the website www.sweete.co.nz/?linkp=1

I've been making my own almond milk - way cheaper (we worked out it cost about $3.60 for almost 2 litres, using organic raw almonds - they don't have to be organic though) and it's easy to do. I soak one cup of almonds in water overnight, then drain them and put them in the blender with 4 cups of cold water, and 1/2 tsp of xanthan gum. Blend it for about 5 mins, then strain it. (I bought some paint strainers from Resene, about $10 for 25 of them - they're a bit like the foot of a pantyhose, and hold on well to the top of a jar - they strain it really well, no gritty bits left in!!). It takes a while to drain through, but I put a cover over it and let it take time. I drain 2 lots at a time, whizzing the blender for a couple of seconds each time I add to the jar to keep it mixed. Once it's all drained through, I add another 4 cups of water to the blender and whizz it up again to collect all the bits, then strain that through into my jars. Once it's all through, I gently squeeze the pulp that's left in the strainer to get all the milk out, then it's ready to go. I usually put one in the fridge, and one in the freezer, and make it about once a week. The pulp that's left over is pretty tasteless, but I add some to the bread I make for my children over the next 3-4 days - just chuck it in the breadmaker with the rest of the ingredients, and it seems to be fine. For Stevia, I got a 59ml bottle of NuNaturals alcohol free liquid from mynaturalhealth.co.nz It was $29 inc shipping, and I think will last for ages - I find often 2-3 drops is enough sweetening for me (apparently 7 drops is considered a serving, 0.35 of a ml)

Thanks nicole, I was wondering where you could get paint strainers from. I have to confess I just use water in most recipes calling for almond milk, or I blend up a bit of almond meal in water. We just got a new blender so I might give your almond milk recipe a try :-) Thanks for the info about the liquid stevia I am hoping to make my own liquid concentrate when my stevia plant gets bigger. :-) Danielle- you could see if you could order a 3kg bag of quinoa (Ceres brand) from a health food store, I don't know what it would cost retail but it's about $40-00 wholesale. I'm gutted about Natvia too I use that to complement NuNaturals, but you can get xylitol or erthyritol and make a Natvia equivalent using the Truvia recipe posted somewhere else here on the forum.

Anyone know where we can source breads similar to the ones mentioned in the book such as Josephs? I'd be keen for a little more variety; I usually stick with bread in a mug for S or sourdough for E. I tried the trim healthy pan bread but didn't like it, and the other recipes use soooo many eggs, and we don't have chooks so that is getting pretty expensive....

Hi ladies, I'm just copying my post from the NZ Bargin Corner board incase anyone misses it, plus some new info I just got :-) I have found glucomannan noodles (called shirataki noodles, made from konjac) here: www.oceanfitnutrition.co.nz/shop/low-carb-shirataki-noodles/ I am trying various Asian grocers in Auckland but have yet to find them anywhere else. Update: I've just heard back from a Japanese store (in Auckland) I contacted re shirataki noodles: Hi Andrea, We do sell shirataki noodles and they are $1.94 each. We have the white ones and the black ones. The total weight is 400g, the noodles weighing 200g. Thank you Erena ************************************ Made In Nippon (NZ) Ltd. 313 Queen St. CBD, Auckland New Zealand ph; 09-377-1891 fax; 09-309-8570 e-mail; madeinnippon@woosh.co.nz website; www.madeinnippon.co.nz************************************ You can also buy Whey Protein Isolate for $48/kg (plus $5 courier), which is the cheapest I can find so far. This is unflavoured and unsweetened. I have been pricing up Glucomannan powder, but as above, the cheapest in NZ seems to be $37 for 227gms (gasp!). I had a look today and you can buy them from www.konjacfoods.com/order/index.htm (which is recommended in the THM book), they will ship internationally...the best price would be if you bought two 500gm packets ($19USD each) and $17 for international shipping. This makes $55USD or $65.62NZD (at today's exchange rate), which makes it much cheaper per kilo (compare that to over $150 for a kilos worth of the 227gm bottles!). I'll be saving up for that one! Does anyone know of anywhere you can get defatted peanut flour in NZ?
I am loving this diet, but finding it somewhat frustrating that so many products are hard to get or too expensive in NZ. Obviously a lot of things are much cheaper in the U.S, like salmon fillets, turkey, not to mention supplements! Also many things you just can't seem to get here at all, like 0% Greek Yoghurt and peanut flour.
We are lucky that all our red meat & milk is grass fed though!

Davis Trading have a lot of specialty ingredients. I went to the one in Palmerston North and found: Chana Dahl, Quinoa, a ground Linseed/sunflower seed/almond mix, Xanthan Gum, Stevia, and Chia seeds.
