Pearl and others, thank you for your suggestions! I have noticed with other non-chocolate recipes we've now tried, that the liquid NuNaturals Stevia drops have tasted much, much better than the powder. So, for things where we can get away with using the liquid drops, we'll go ahead and use those. For recipes that require dry sugar, I think we'll to ahead and use the xylitol. We're enjoying all of the regular meal recipes and smoothie/frappe recipes we've tried, and so we're thrilled with the THM book! Just needed to get a handle on the desserts/sweet tooth problem. I appreciate your suggestions.

My concern with the stevia, and hopefully someone can answer this, is that it's a phytoestrogen. I'm nursing and having troubles with my hormones and want to help balance them out, so I'd prefer not to take something that could interfere. Thanks for any input you can give!

I'm nursing and having troubles with my hormones and want to help balance them out, so I'd prefer not to take something that could interfere. Thanks for any input you can give! Phyto estrogens do not mean a food is unhealthy. Many of the healthiest foods on the planet that fight cancers contain phtoestrogens eg brocolli, beans, flax etc. Can you link me to where you read stevia is a phyto estrogen because I have not read that. There is so much contradicting evidence with regards to soy and its phto estrogen content whether it is helpful or harmful. We suggest staying away from too much soy, not because it is a phyto estrogen (although it is a very strong one) but because of it's phytates and effect on thyroid function. God made many extremely beneficial foods that contain phyto estrogens so we need to trust him in that. Even men need estrogen to stay healthy. Their brains and heart will deteriorate if it sinks much below 20 on a range of 7- 45. Only when it rises too high and imbalances their testosterone levels, is it a problem.

After using it for 5 months, I have developed an allergy to stevia. It gives me a red bumpy itchy rash on my arms, hands, legs, back, even ears! Up until recently, I had no problems. Except for "cheat days" when I eat food with sugar (we call them "I" meals - for illegal!), I have been using the NuNaturals NuStevia pure extract powder for sweetener. No more, but I don't want to go back to using sugar. Any suggestions? I do love my sweets!

suziq- Pearl mentioned on I think page 2 of this thread that coconut sugar would be her choice rather than giving up THM all together.
I have tried 3 different brands of Stevia in the past and didn't really care for any of them. I received the NuNatrals powder about a week ago and it does taste a bit better than the other ones I have tried, especially the aftertaste. After eating or drinking something with it in it, my mouth is super dry!! Like, reallly really dry. I will have to drink about 20 + ounces of water after to just help it not be so dry.
Anyone else experience this?

Thanks; I went back and found that message. Anyone know where is a good place to purchase coconut sugar (as in, easy on the budget)? I'll give that a try!

I saw some at Costco a couple weeks ago... I always look at Amazon and Vitacost for stuff too.

Howdy, I need to know if there is an ingredients list for ALL recipes in the book? I am trying to order this month to start eating THM way next month, but going through whole book is taking a while. I wanted to place a co-op order for things (we have 10 children still at home), so just trying to do things quicker:) Also what about a resource list (websites, etc) for other tools: grinder, kettlebells, etc. THanks ever so much.

what about using 100% xylitol? I've seen this in the health food store and it was more reasonably priced. It comes from a tree sort of like maple syrup.

Is Splenda really that much of a problem on this plan?

I saw a video on youtube from the bulk herb store (I think) taking stevia and fermenting it in a bottle. She said it tasted just like sugar, and that if you grow your own stevia, in October you can harvest it. The leaves will dry and the veins turn white, hence the white powder, then use just a little in water to make a sweetener that is not bitter.

Ok I am also struggling with the flavor of stevia (I can handle it for some desserts, but my husband hates it)...I have tried both Truvia and nunaturals and especially can't seem to get it right for chocolate recipes. So, are you saying that monk fruit and coconut sugar are both going to raise blood glucose levels and won't promote weight loss? Also, I need to know if THM is going to work if I operate a little more flexibly with allowing sugar. For example, if I eat a o% Greek yogurt that's sweetened with sugar and has about 10 carbs, is that ok as long as I'm keeping my carbs under 45 grams? Or am I sabotaging myself? Greek yogurt is one example. There are several other food items that fit the no fat, lower carb category that are still sweetened with sugar (jam, ff creamer, etc...). Is this a complete no-no or just not what you can recommend (even though it might work for weight loss)? I just don't know if I can be hard core about some of these things...

I bought Sweet Additions Stevia packets at Aldi yesterday. The ingredients list Erythritol, REBIANA, Natural flavors. Stevia is not on the ingredients list. What is Rebiana?
HELP!

Rebiana, or Reb-A, is extracted from the stevia plant. It is supposedly the part of the stevia plant that renders it sweet. I believe it may be in Truvia also, although the label for Truvia says stevia leaf extract. I think perhaps Reb-A is just another name for that.

Is Splenda really that much of a problem on this plan? Splenda will not hinder weight loss. It is not recommended simply from a health standpoint. But you can use Splenda on the plan and it will still work for weight loss. It's up to you.
