I have discovered that a mix of Xylitol & Stevia is a good balance of sweet/low cal/no aftertaste. I used to use a small amount of raw sugar to balance the aftertaste of the stevia, but after reading about xylitol's dental health benefits, I've switched to that It does take a bit of math and/or experimentation to get the measurements right, but my "sweetener cocktail" is pretty yummy Hopefully that helps someone!

I have been using the THM guidelines for about six weeks now and have lost about ten pounds. I am by nature a sensitive individual - I always suffer from whatever side effects are possible be it sugar or aspirin. That said, I have a sweet tooth and have been using Truvia to make the treats in your book. About the same time I started the plan, and with increasing frequency and severity, I have been suffering from depression and mood swings. I had thought it was just that time of month, but am now wondering if it is the Truvia. My internet research supports this as a possibility, but I am wondering if anyone else has had a similar experience?

I need to change to a cheaper sweetener. I love Truvia because it is easy! But I fly through a box of 80 packets in less than a week! And I have no money... but that box seems to jump in my grocery cart regardless. Nustevia Pure Extract Powder here I come.

I am one of those who get a sick stomach with use of the artificial sugars. I mostly avoid anything that needs to be sweet. However, that means I am always on the look for something sweet (bad sweet tooth). How good is the brown sugar substitute. I really want to do some baking and have found several recipes that use it.

The brown sugar is great for so many baking recipes, as it has a real sugar texture, and a bit of extra flavor too. Have you tried a pure stevia? It is not an artificial sweetener, but natural. You will probably have better success with this.

My guys are all sensitive to stevia too. I have learned that it is in the ragweed family and they are allergic to ragweed.

Hi, I seem to be having a rash since starting the THM diet. I have lost 8.5 lbs in a little over a month and that thrills me. But I've stopped using the whey protein in my shakes thinking that was causing my rashes, but after stopping for 2 weeks I am still having a rash frequently. I think it may be the stevia. What other natural sweetener could I use? Do you approve of Lo Han Guo?

Sorry to hear that des, some are allergic to even pure stevia extract. The other two would be erythritol or xylitol. Monk fruit is ok in products on occasion but not as a main sweetner, Pearl is checking into it though. Start slow with xylitol and build up. I don't think the product Just Like Sugar has stevia, you might want to check that as well.

des the product steffanie3 mentioned, Just Like Sugar, is made from chicory root & is a great option to add to your list. I use all of the on-plan sweetener options (stevia-powder & liquid, Erythritol, Xylitol, & Just Like sugar) & they are all good.

Do you know if it is just stevia extract, or if it has off plan ingredients such as maltodextrin?

The inulin is ok. So it looks like it is on plan. I think that may be one I use sometimes. It is not as sweet as just the plain extract, but it has a good flavor, in my opinion.

You advocate stevia as the main sweetener in your plan but I cannot get used to the taste. Help! Most stevias taste pretty awful, that is a fact. But we urge you to give one type of stevia a chance. There is one brand that even the hardest core anti stevia taste buds have embraced. It is Nustevia Pure Extract Powder. Nustevia has other stevia products but most of them have fillers. The extract powder is the type we hope you'll buy. The best way to buy it the first time is in the 1 oz spice jar. It is very potent so that little amount should last you a good while. You can always buy the powder in bulk later, once you are more used to it. Many have told us how they had tried brand after brand of stevia only to have their treats continually taste awful. That was our experience also. Once you learn the art of sweetening your foods with Nustevia we predict you may just become a believer. Don't start with a chocolate recipe. A sweet chocolate taste is harder to master. Start with a vanilla flavored pudding recipe. Try our basic quick pudding recipe on page 366 but don't use the cocoa. Replace it with a little vanilla extract. The Nustevia extract powder is extremely sweet. We have found that one good downward shake is equal to about one teaspoon of sugar. The key is to start with less, taste and then slowly work up to the right sweetness for you by adding more little by little. The 2 serving pudding recipe might need anywhere from 4-8 shakes according to your own sweetness tolerance. Once you learn the art of shaking, tasting and tweaking little by little you'll be able to move on to chocolate based recipes and expertly find that perfect amount of sweetness. Truvia is another stevia sweetener we approve on plan. Some of us love the taste, others are put off by the cooling mouth effect of the erythritol. Still others do not trust erythritol to be completely natural. We will not argue the safety of erythritol in this FAQ, but for those who are not extreme purists and who like the taste, it makes a handy sweetener. It is available at most grocery stores and like pure stevia, it has no impact on blood sugar so perfect for all our desserts if it is palatable to you. Nustevia extract and Truvia together can bring a nice balance of sweetness to a recipe. Our Special Angent Brownie/Cake calls for both however it can also be made with either Truvia or Nustevia alone. The issue with Truvia is that it can be more expensive because it is far less sweet than Nustevia extract so more must be used. If using it solely for our Special Agent Brownie Cake, 5-6 Tbs must be used and that is almost half a tub! Some THM's use Nustevia alone for no other reason than to save money. Don't give up on stevia if you have weight to lose. You really need the no carb effect in your desserts if you have a sweet tooth and like to eat a lot of sweet foods.Simply learn the art of shaking in Nustevia extract a little bit at a time and you may surprise yourself. If you do not have weight to lose, a little raw honey to sweeten your drinks and desserts should not be a problem but honey is notorious for fattening people up so we reiterate 'a little'. Coconut/Palm sugar and Monk fruit are two other sweeteners that might be okay if you are not seeking weight loss. They are too high in fructose for people with serious weight to shed but may work for those closer to goal. Agave Syrup is far too high in fructose and will not help with weight issues in our opinion. Finally, splenda is not something we endorse and we outline why in our book but if you want to use it, you can on our plan (we won't shun you for it ha ha) but we suggest use use the form without fillers called EZ Sweet. I realize these are old posts. I felt the same way about stevia until I tried liquid stevia. That has made all the difference for me.

THM brand stevia is like no other though. I can taste it straight and it's sweet. No funny taste.
