I looked for this in our store the other day, and couldn't find anything similar. In googling it upon returning, it seems to be the same as a garbanzo bean, and in speaking with a friend of mine from India who is very familiar with it, she basically confirmed this. The way it's described in the book, it doesn't seem anywhere close....

I got my chana dal beans online. Bob's Red Mill brand is what I found and on the bag it says "They are made by splitting a small husked relative of the chickpea."

They are quite different from garbanzos, smaller and more golden in hue.

Here in South Africa chana dahl is known as gram dholl.

I looked for them at Walmart in the international foods section and could not find them. how do they come packaged? dried in a bag? in a can?
