My dad and I are doing a 500 mile bike ride this late spring and I wanted your advice on getting ready for it and what to eat during it. After reading the book, I want to make sure I eat properly so I dont eat into muscle. I will work on interval training most of the time, not huge long bike rides every day, like I had planned on before reading the book. But, my concern is during the ride. Most days are 50-80 miles per day. They have frequent water stops and they provide cookies, granola bars and fruit (generally apples, bananas, oranges). What would be best to eat? Should I bring along a container of peanut butter to go with apples? Since I will be using up so much, will the granola bars be OK to replenish the glycogin so I dont turn to muscle? I know it is a little ways off, but I need to start preparing my body and my mind for this huge endeaver. And now that I am eating the THM way, I want to encorporate that into my bike riding. I wont be going for loosing weight at that point, but I want to be safe and healthy doing it. Thanks.

For the actual ride you are going to want to make sure that you are eating enough carbs. DH and I did a bike ride this past fall that was around 350 miles. I was on a anti candida diet at the time and found that I had to add carbs back in otherwise I was crashing 20 miles into the day. Will they serve you breakfast? That would be a good time for oatmeal and yogurt, if you want more protein grab some sausages. Make some of your own granola bars to back with you if you can, that way you can sweeten them how you desire and add in all the protein that you want. For dinner, our ride served both, I always made sure to get a generous portion of the meat and a baked potato if they had them. I'm GF as well, so I couldn't do any of the bread products. Rides like this usually aren't the time to be to worried about carb intake IMO. For training you could probably add in more S helpers and E meals. Also lots of protein. I didn't have problems with energy during training, but our training rides were not on back to back days which gave me time to recover.

I am not sure if they provide breakfasts, but I think they provide a couple evening meals. Otherwise you are on your own. Some churches along the way had fundraiser meals you could purchase for lunches. Im going with my dad, who has done this ride for several years, and he always liked to leave early in the morning and just used some of the snacks they provided from the day before for his breakfast so he could get a move on. I could probablyl pack some beef jerkey for portable protein. I thought about getting a protein powder in travel packs, too. Its not until June, but with reading the book and such, I want to make smart choices for my body. Even though I will be using up a bunch of carbs, and I know I will need high energy foods, I dont want to abuse that and let loose on cookies or anything (which there will be plenty of). It will still be bad for my insulin. Maybe I can make some of the Flax Seed Protein Bars from the book and bring those. It will be hot so I have to have things that wont melt. I dont know if I could make the Basic Treat Bars. Thanks so much for your advice.

Would anyone recommend Dr. Schulze superfood bars? They would be high in carbs from all the dried fruit, but it has nuts in it and his superfood powder in it. I would think they would be healthier and give me the energy boost I will need without the added junk. And they would travel well, so I could get a bunch and carry them with me. Any other suggestions?
