Serene Chats:
Another new recipe for you made possible by Glucomannan. We had so much more to share about the incredible benefits of glucomannan, but once our book reached over 600 pages, enough was enough! So look out for future posts here at our page on what “Gluccie” can do for you. Yes, that is what I call glucomannan. I consider it my good friend, and every friend needs a nick name.
Take this latest recipe that would not be possible without glucomannan. We call it “Nighty-Night Hot Custard.” We thought taking pics in our robes eating this delightful stuff might inspire you to do the same. It’s a recipe that I created very recently so it didn’t make the book. It’ll be in the next book of course, but we had to share it with you first.
A little background for this recipe. In the past, after all my little ones were tucked in bed I would take my nice hot shower and slip into my fuzzy pink robe and slippers. Imagine the lights dimmed and soft music floating delicately from the living room. Peace has settled in place of the noisy clatter that I hear all day. My favorite chair and current good read awaits me along with a hot drink. Ahhh!
The scene sounds relaxing, right? Well, it would be but for the war inside of me where one side shouts insane things like… “GIANT HEAPING TABLESPOONS OF PEANUT BUTTER AND HALF A BAR OF DARK CHOCOLATE!!!!!!!” Sometimes it may even yell for “BREAD and BUTTAH.’ Has your brain ever told you to go back to the fridge and heartily dig in to supper’s leftovers at 10 pm? You’re not alone. I know some of you have to fight with the voice that yells, “HAVE A GIANT BOWL OF FROSTED CEREAL!”
My rational mind tries to reply that my hot tea is suiting me just fine, but the fact is, I often want to eat… yes, EAT something soothing and filling, especially when I’m nursing. Hunger screams at me and I’m like a baby who wants a warm tummy full of milk to go to bed on.
My present evenings are no longer a war. Now “Gluccie” and I whip up hot vanilla custard topped with steaming berry compote. I let the fragrant steam rise from my large bowl of goodness and sauna my face with divine, delicious warmth. With every creamy, smooth, and rich spoonful, I am satisfied yet hardly consume any calories. As a Trim healthy Mama, calories are not considered your enemy. You get to eat plenty of them at many meals. We don’t bother constantly counting them, but it is only sensible not to consume too many in late evening hours when all you’ll soon be doing is sleeping.
Now with my “Nighty- Night Custard” I feel comforted and appeased without the fetters of guilt and added needless pounds. It is in the category of a Fuel Pull in our S and E Plan. I awake vibrant in the morning feeling like I deserve a hearty breakfast.

Serene called me so excited about this new recipe. I whipped it up so quickly and could not get over how soothing and warming it is. In the cool months, I love hot food and drinks and this recipe fits that bill perfectly. I’ve been making it a lot for my sister Vange and I in the afternoons. Despite the title, it’s not just for evenings. We sit there in my living room for a few minutes and feel calmed and comforted by our hot custard. It goes well with a good sister chat. Serene includes a lemon or berry compote with hers. I tried that but prefer the custard alone –as is. I also use butter extract to give a butterscotch flavor to the custard in place of the vanilla extract. Tweak for your own favorite flavors.
Note -We are calling this custard because we grew up Down Under where custards are not set. They are pourable. Don’t expect this to be set. It is a very loose, pudding consistency that you can easily pour into a bowl or large cup and easily stir.
NIGHTY NIGHT HOT CUSTARD
Basic Ingredients: Whey protein * plan approved sweetener *vanilla or butter extract * boiling water *celtic sea salt (or any other sea salt) * glucomannan *coconut oil
1. Turn on your kettle or put 1 and ¼ cups water in a small saucepan and bring to a rapid boil.
2. Put 1 flat tsp. of vanilla whey protein in blender along with ½ tsp. extra virgin coconut oil, 2 good pinches of celtic sea salt, 3-4 shakes of Nustevia (or 3 teaspoons of Truvia), and ½ -1 tsp. of vanilla or butter flavored extract.
3. Add 1 cup boiling water to blender and start blender. While ingredients are blending add scant ¾ tsp. glucomannan.
4. Blend for about a minute and a half, turn off blender, add the extra ¼ cup of water then blend again for a little while longer.
5. Taste and adjust, your end result should be a perfect balance between the sweetener and the salt. You may need to add more of either sea salt, sweetener or more vanilla or butter flavoring. Keep playing with taste ratio until the flavor is something that satisfies and delights you.
Optional Compote:
1. Put 1 peeled, seeded and roughly chopped lemon or a handful of frozen or thawed raspberries into a small saucepan.
2. Add 1 Tbs. of water and allow lemon or berries to boil and caramelize along with a dash or two of Nustevia or Truvia. Turn to low, place lid on and let simmer for a few minutes. Check occasionally, if it needs a little more water, add another Tbs. The lemon should become a lot more translucent and a little browned when ready.
3. Top custard with lemon or berry Compote and enjoy a little tart burst with every creamy spoonful of custard
