For those who have not tried Chana Dal yet or who aren't even sure what it might look like, here's a super simple and delicious bowl that I made for myself. I have never liked beans, and can only tolerate lentils, but I actually love Chana Dal. Not only is this super yummy, but it's super fast and easy! Chana Dal cooks in only about 20 minutes. So, what I like to do is soak a bunch of it overnight, and some time the next day, I cook them all up. Then I can either keep some in the fridge, or put it in the freezer in individual portions, or in correct portion size to make Special Agent Brownie Cake with it (yum!). And for a quick lunch, here's what I love: *cooked Chana Dal * sea salt and pepper * nutritional yeast * Creole seasoning * onion powder * water or chicken broth * tiny bit of oil Now, just put your portion of Chana dal in a skillet, along with a Tbsp or so of water or chicken broth to keep it from sticking, and sprinkle your seasonings over it, to taste. Heat it up until everything's mixed together well and it's nice and hot. At the end, I like to add just a tad bit of olive oil or coconut oil to it. Just 1/4- 1/2 teaspoon. And that's it! Super easy. And lightning fast. Pair this with some veggies, or you can do what I did tonight for dinner, and have a Big Boy smoothie along with it. (I finally got some more frozen strawberries today, and I was just so excited to have a Big Boy smoothie again!)

Up to 1 and 1/2 cups is the serving size, along with other beans and lentils.

I cant find the post where someone was asking about getting yellow split peas and being told it was chana- anyway , in THM on page 204 they give the site www.mendosa.com as a reference and recipe site. It gives the names of two companies: namaste and ethnic grocer : as being companies passing off peas as chana. Just thought you should know so no one is paying premium for peas!

I was told when I ordered mine from the health food store that they are actually baby garbanzo beans? Wondered if this is true. The bag doesn't say this, but does say chana dal is a small pea, peeled and cut in half. I cooked mine according to the recipe on the bag, with Indian spices, minus the oil and added chicken breast. They were very good. :-)

I've wondered about this because they do look like small split garbanzo beans.

There are a few different things that people say they are. Just be aware when you buy them that they are actually their own thing - they look like yellow split peas, but they are actually different if you look closer. Just be aware when you buy them.

If you have an Asian grocery store anywhere near you you may be able to get them there. They are a bit cheaper at my Asian grocery store than they are online. I was surprised to even have an Asian grocery near me, as I live in WV. Also, if you do have an Asian grocery and they don't carry chana dahl then perhaps you could ask them if they would order some for you?

I have found Moong Dal in our local grocery store bulk bins, and they look exactly like the pictures of Chana dal I have seen, cook up the same way, and taste just like the descriptions I have read. Is Moong Dal the same as Chana Dal?
