I'm still working my way through the book, so if this is answered in it, maybe someone could direct me to the page. I am gathering some of the ingredients I would like to incorporate into our meals and just bought ex virg coconut oil from costco for $15.99 for 54 oz. They did not have regular coconut oil. The label says it is for cooking up to 350 degrees. Can I use this in anything? What are the best oils to use when cooking? I'm now worried that I have been harming us by cooking with ex virgin olive oil for everything because I guess you are not supposed to use it for high temperatures. Ugh. Thanks in advance for any input and suggestions!

I've been wondering about this. I read in the book that we need to be using virgin coconut oil and not the "cooking " kind. It may have been for a drink or something raw, but does that mean not to take the Lou Ana brand (for example) straight but it's OK for cooking? The regular groceries stores around here don't seem to carry virgin coconut oil. I'll have to go to a specialty store.

It's OK to eat the cooking coconut oil - you can use it in the Skinny Chocolate recipe if you want. But it's not a superfood like extra virgin coconut oil, so you wouldn't be getting the same health benefits from it. I think the recipe for Earth Milk says to use EV coconut oil or leave it out. That's because it's meant to be a purely superfood drink.

Oh my. I tried the slightest bit of ex virg coco oil and I was so sick last night. Maybe the flu, but I can't shake the feeling that it was the oil. I can' t muster up the guts to try it again....

The first time I tried EVCO, I took two tablespoons at night and was up for hours in the bathroom so sick! I spoke to a rep at the company I purchased the oil from (Wilderness Family Naturals), and she said that candida and other harmful microorganisms are most active at night, so taking an anti-fungal/antimicrobial oil like coconut at night will cause more than the usual amount of die-off. For me, the symptoms were gastrointestinal, but flu-like feelings are symptoms of die-off too.
Incidentally, I can eat coconut oil anytime of day now without trouble.

Do you remember how gradually you began to use it? Since I bought a whole jar of it, I would like to be able to tolerate it. Will it probably cause a reaction the next time? It' s hard to want to take more of it now.

This is all very interesting. Would using the EVCO in recipes like Earth Milk or Skinny Chocolate cause "die off" symptoms, too? Is that like detox? Could it be harmful to an unborn baby?

Yes, I would like to know as well if the detox could be harmful to unborn babies. And I hope someone can answer your other questions as well.

formerfarmgirl: I'm sure that if you start in small amounts earlier in the day it will be fine. I don't know a lot about die-off and pregnancy, but I believe that if you go gradually, it will not be harmful. My experience with it was almost ten years ago, so I don't quite remember how long it took. It probably depends on the state of your digestive system.
busyhandsmom: To my knowledge, EVOO is not very antimicrobial. By die-off, I mean when microorganisms die and flood the system with toxins. Is that what is meant by detox? I'm not sure!

I don't know either. Did you mean EVCO?

Ack! I made a mistake; I thought you were asking if olive oil could take the place of coconut oil, but you were asking a about coconut oil (duh!).
Again, I'm no expert, but I would think that if you start out with a teaspoon in the morning and increase it gradually every week, it will be fine. CO is sooooo good for your baby! I bet if you Google "coconut oil, pregnancy, die off," you could find info pretty easily. You also could call Wilderness Family Naturals, as they are really well informed about CO research (or at least they used to be).

Btw, I think that detox means the release of harmful substances (chemicals, metals, hormones, etc) during cleansing, while die off is as I described above.
