Hi Ladies, I've struggled to breastfeed all 5 of our babies...they just wouldn't put on weight until I started formula supplementing. My breasts were small to start with, didn't grow much during pregnancy and within 1-2 weeks of having a baby whatever pro-breastfeeding midwives and LC's I was in contact with would tell me I needed to start supplementing. I read an excellent book this time around (bub is 6 months now) which mentioned the role of hormones and hormone receptors in breastfeeding. And after reading a little more in THM I'm wondering if there's something in the bioidentical hormone arena that could help me to boost my supply. I have tried many of the typical herbs that help. Nothing made enough of a difference to continue with. On the THM diet I have noticed my expressed milk is much more yellow and creamy looking, but it's still nowhere near enough to exclusively breastfeed. Has anyone had anything like this and found a solution?
PS I love how this diet is so jam-packed with mother-foods like quinoa, cinnamon, flax, coconut...

My advice would be to have your throid checked; by someone who is willing to look at more than just the blood test (which is horribly inaccurate.) I had the same problem with my first three kids, they quit and screamed for a bottle by 6 months. My first was so bad that I almost did not even attempt to bf our second. When #3 was about a year old I finally found a dr that would take me (and my family history) seriously and do more than a blood test (which still shows within 'normal' range) to check my thyroid and I went on medicine. The lactation consultant came by after #4 was born and asked if I had had any problems bf'ing my other babies. She had noticed I was on thyroid meds and informed me that thyroid problems reduce your milk supply and you will struggle regardless of what you do. It was one of the 'smack your forehead moments'! ! (#4 is now 13 months and refuses a bottle. If you try to give him milk of any kind in any bottle or sippy cup he throws it and shakes his head "No, No!"

Hi there! I also struggled to breatfeed - but only our 6th, as I was so much older that time round, and with small breasts with not much milk. A homeopathic/herbal remedy drops that I found at the local health food store called "MUMma" by New Roots totally helped me. Also I read recently on the Weston A Price site that raw organic milk - 4 cups a day will massively help. Maybe not our waistline, but certainly our milk supply! Blessings to you!

Thanks pattypaws. My MIL's new house cow just calved, so she's been giving us raw organic milk. Maybe I should try that.
Cassandra, had my thyroid checked today and it's not the problem. hmmm....
