I’m talking about my husband. Since it is his birthday tomorrow, I think it’s time for an update about him. Charlie is a guy of few words, and while I did manage, (with some arm twisting) to get him to write the foreword for our book that’s as far as he’ll go when it comes to talking about himself. So I’ll do it.
Charlie turns 57 tomorrow. If you have read his foreword, you know he was skeptical about trying another diet. I had encouraged… (okay… cajoled) him into many different and often extreme diets over the years of our marriage. He never kept them up for long since he hated going without lots of desserts and hated eating anything close to what he called “rabbit food.” Since he is fifteen years older than me, I was always concerned about the way he ate which included lots of junk food. I worried he would lose his health too early. He needed to be around and vital for our five children and me.
His weight and health held up eating basically whatever he wanted (except for the times I had him on strange diets) for many years but when he turned 50, somehow it all caught up with him. My fears became reality. He developed high blood pressure, all his joints hurt, his moods were unstable, he lacked energy, he snored loudly every night and his body jerked even when asleep, he mentioned to a lot of people that “it’s all down hill after 50.” No longer was he just carrying the ten extra pounds that I’d always known him to wear, now he was significantly overweight. Forty extra pounds made him feel horrible.
After skeptically watching me eat the Trim Healthy way for over a year, he finally decided he would try it. He realized it wasn’t a “rabbit food” diet and he realized he could feed his sweet tooth and still stay on plan. I’d tried plenty of recipes on him and he’d slowly become a believer. The first year on plan he lost thirty pounds - it came off slowly yet surely but he enjoyed every meal and dessert that I made him and never felt deprived. Ten more pounds slowly dropped off during the next two years. This last year, he has lost another ten. Now I have to feed him what we call Crossovers so no more weight is lost. He does not need to be thinner!
Snoring? What’s that? My husband now sleeps like a baby and thankfully that means I sleep better too since I don‘t have to listen to it. Blood pressure issues? Nope. No need for any medication. He still used herbs to help control his BP up until a year ago but now they are not needed and it is perfect without the use of any supplements. Sore joints? No, those pains went away. Moodiness? Depression? They are no longer part of his personality. His cholesterol profile is perfect - his doctor likes to comment on that but what does Charlie eat for breakfast most mornings? Cheesy Omelets! Ha! I don’t mean to sound like he is super human. Of course not, but he loves his food and loves feeling better.
Something happens after several years eating the Trim Healthy way. Serene and I have noticed this lately. Our metabolisms have revved. Without the addition of Crossovers, we drop weight much more easily than the first few years on plan. Charlie is noticing the same thing now. He even has a junk food cheat meal once or twice a week and his body now handles it just like he used to when he was a younger man. Could it be that the plan reverses insulin resistance? We’re still not sure what it is but it works.
Happy Birthday one day early to the love of my life - my husband! (He is not going to be real thrilled about being the subject of this post but will endure it like the good sport he is).
